If you happen to be driving through East Texas, be sure to look out for a town named blackjack. This tiny community is really little more than a wide spot in the road. Tucked away in the rural portions of Cherokee County, Blackjack, Texas is the town named after the game.

The truth is, no one really knows how Blackjack, Texas got its name. That has been lost to history, along with much of the origins of the community. You can’t even really call it a town. It’s an unincorporated community that has a population so small you can’t even find much information about it online.

There are some clues that may help us understand how Blackjack, Texas got its name. Nearby the little community of Blackjack are the towns Reklaw and Sacul. These are also small Texas towns. They are mostly inhabited by the descendants of the two families that originated them – Walker and Lucas. As you can see, Reklaw and Sacul are the names Walker and Lucas spelled backwards.

That doesn’t see like the most creative way to name a town, but it obviously worked for the town’s original residents. It doesn’t take much of a stretch to imagine that only marginal thought was given to the naming of Blackjack, Texas. Maybe there was a regular game of blackjack played in the town at some point. Maybe it was a stopover for gamblers who enjoyed the game. We may never know.
