The 212 name of the system gives the basic concept away. Before we understand any blackjack betting system we have to think in terms of units. A unit is a predefined amount of money, usually corresponding to the table minimum at the blackjack table. At a $5 table a bet of $5 would be one unit. $10 would be two units, and so on.
To begin the Manhattan or 212 blackjack system of betting you start with two units. Let’s say that you are playing online blackjack with a table minimum of $5. Your first bet with the Manhattan will be $10. If you win the first hand your next bet will be reduced to one unit or $5. If you win this second hand your next bet will be two units. Then you will increase the bet one unit each time you win.
The moment that you lose a blackjack hand the whole process begins all over again with two units.
What is the Purpose of the 212 Blackjack System?
As we mentioned earlier, the whole idea behind the 212 blackjack system is to take advantage of streaks. You want to be making the most money possible while the cards are in your favor. On the opposite side this system also has a goal of minimizing your losses when the deck is cold.
The key to the system is the reduction in bet after the first win. That allows you to lock in a portion of the profit that you have made at the table. Even if you lose the second hand you have broken even because you reduced your bet to one unit after the first win.
So, why reduce the bet after the first win? Shouldn’t you be trying to take advantage of the streak? Yes, but by dropping back down after the first win you are also guarding against getting in too soon. A single winning hand is not out of the question in blackjack. Nor is a single losing hand. You need to be sure that a streak is in progress before you start to up the bets you make.
