Power Blackjack
The historical Power Blackjack variant offered Power Double and Power Split options, offset by dealer 22 pushing active player hands. Do not confuse that game with newer products using the same name; compare the exact rules.
Historical Power Blackjack rules
The version analyzed by Wizard of Odds used six ordinary 52-card decks, paid blackjack 3:2, allowed double after split and offered no surrender. The player could Power Double specified two-card totals: after seeing the one double-down card, the player could discard it and take the next card in the shoe.
A Power Split allowed a hard 15 or 16 to be divided even when the two cards were not the same rank. Ordinary splits remained available under the configuration’s resplitting rules.

Dealer 22 is the trade-off
If the dealer busts with 22, non-busted player hands push instead of winning. That compensation rule is essential to the game’s return; the extra player options cannot be evaluated in isolation.
Two documented configurations
The historical Las Vegas configuration had the dealer hit soft 17, allowed Power Doubles on hard 10 and 11, used a dealer peek and allowed ordinary resplits to four hands except aces. Wizard of Odds calculated a 0.55% house edge for that package under its strategy.
The historical WagerWorks configuration had the dealer stand on soft 17, allowed Power Doubles on 9 through 11 including soft 19 and 20, used the European no-hole-card procedure and allowed only one split. The analysis reported a 0.23% house edge, while warning that the online rules might later have changed.
Those figures are not interchangeable. Changing the soft-17 rule, hole-card liability, Power Double set, split limits, payout or strategy changes the result.
Name collision with modern products
Some current live-dealer games also use “Power Blackjack” for different mechanics such as triple or quadruple downs. The shared name does not mean they use Power Split, card replacement or the historical WagerWorks paytable.
Evaluation checklist
- Identify which Power Blackjack product is offered.
- Verify the blackjack payout and dealer-22 rule.
- Record eligible Power Double and Power Split hands.
- Check soft 17, hole-card procedure, splits and surrender.
- Use strategy and return figures for that exact configuration only.
