Multi-Hand Blackjack is yet another blackjack variation that is exclusive to online casinos. It has been offered from the earliest days of online blackjack. Today, Multi-Hand Blackjack is actually the most common form of blackjack currently found online.

Playing multiple hands has been allowed in live casino play for years. If there are empty seats at a blackjack table, live blackjack players are almost always allowed to play more than one hand. The difference between the live scenario and blackjack online is that Multi-Hand Blackjack is always available, 24-7.

The Basics Of Multi-hand Blackjack

There is absolutely no difference between how Multi-Hand Blackjack and standard blackjack are played. They operate under the same basic rules. Players must beat the dealer with a total as close to 21 as possible without going over. A blackjack is paid at odds of 3-2, and insurance pays 2-1. All other wins are paid at even money.

Multi-Hand Blackjack does have a few subtle differences that are worth noting, however, due to the nature of online play. These are elements one should seriously consider before playing online Multi-Hand Blackjack.

First, card counting is virtually impossible in online Multi-Hand Blackjack. Online casinos use a computerized dealer who “virtually” shuffles the cards following each hand of play. What this means is that each and every hand of play begins with a fresh six or eight-deck shoe. In order to develop a reliable count a player must be able to count deep into a shoe containing six or eight decks. That opportunity is never available in online Multi-Hand Blackjack because of the shuffle after each hand.

Second, the table minimums for online Multi-Hand Blackjack are typically much lower than they are in live blackjack play. It is common to find a minimum bet of $1 per hand. The reason for the lower table minimums is to encourage the player to play all of the hands available. What the blackjack player would do well to remember is that a cold deck isn’t changed by the number of hands the player plays. In essence, a blackjack player can lose more money in Multi-Hand Blackjack by being enticed to play all of the hands offered.

Multi-Hand Blackjack is a game geared for the blackjack player who craves action. For action betting in blackjack, Multi-Hand Blackjack is the way to go.

How Multi-hand Blackjack Is Dealt

To begin, a player will log into their account at the online casino of their choice. From the selection of games offered the player will choose Multi-Hand Blackjack and be taken to a virtual table in the online casino.

On the screen the player will see a virtual table with five betting spots. Each of these spots represents one hand. A player can choose to play one or all of these five hands.

Before the cards are dealt the player must place a bet for each of the hands that they wish to play. This is done by clicking the stack of chips on the bottom right of the screen. Chips are sorted by denomination, so a player only needs to click on the denomination they wish to bet. If the player wishes to bet $1 per hand they will click on the $1 chip and then click again in the betting spot to place the bet. This action is repeated for each hand the player wishes to play.

Once all bets have been made the computerized dealer will begin to deal the cards. The cards are dealt in the same manner as standard blackjack, beginning with the hand to the dealer’s immediate left and continuing around the table. All player cards are dealt face up. The dealer is the last to receive cards and receives one face up and one face down card.

Player Options In Multi-hand Blackjack

If the dealer does not have a blackjack or also known as a natural, the player will then be given the option of acting on each of their hands to improve their total. If the dealer has a blackjack the hand is over and the player loses on each hand in play unless they also hold a blackjack.

A player may do one of the following:

  • Stand on any total.
  • Hit any total less than 21.
  • Double down any two original cards, except for a blackjack (A-10).
  • Split a pair and resplit up to three times.
  • A pair of aces may be split only once and receive one additional card.
  • Take insurance if the dealer shows an ace.

Dealer Options In Multi-hand Blackjack

After the player has acted on all of their hands, the dealer will then exercise their options. These options are the same found in all varieties of standard blackjack:

  • The dealer must hit any total of 16 or less.
  • The dealer must stand on any total of 17 or greater.
