James Grosjean is a blackjack computer analyst, author and professional player who entered the Blackjack Hall of Fame in 2006. His work analyzes advantage opportunities; it is not permission to use devices, collusion or concealed information unlawfully.
Beyond Counting
The Blackjack Hall of Fame identifies Grosjean as the author of Beyond Counting, published in 2000, and the expanded Exhibit CAA: Beyond Counting, published in 2007. Its book list also credits The Ultimate Report.
The significance of the work is analytical: it calculated edges and strategies for nonstandard situations. Any result depends on the exact game state, procedure and assumptions and may not apply to a current casino.
How information changes a decision
A basic-strategy chart chooses an action using the player’s hand, the dealer’s upcard and the stated rules. Card counting adds information about cards already dealt. An analysis of a nonstandard situation may use a different information set, so its recommendation cannot simply be copied into an ordinary game.
Consider a hypothetical one-unit wager with only two outcomes: an even-money win or a loss. At a 49% win probability, its expected profit is 0.49 × 1 − 0.51 × 1 = −0.02 units. At 52%, it becomes 0.52 − 0.48 = +0.04 units. These are illustrative probabilities, not Grosjean’s published results or blackjack’s actual outcome distribution: real blackjack also has pushes, naturals, doubles and splits.
The lesson is that an edge belongs to a defined set of conditions. If the information is misread, the rules differ or a payout is smaller, the calculation must change. A positive expectation also describes an average over repeated opportunities; it does not promise a win on the next hand or in one session.
A sensible starting point for readers
Study basic strategy before advanced advantage analysis. Then use the rule-comparison tool to see why a rule change matters, and read about bankroll and risk before interpreting an edge as a workable plan. This separates three different questions: what action has the best expectation, how uncertain the results are, and whether the proposed activity is permitted.
Hall of Fame and Blackjack Cup
The Hall records Grosjean’s 2006 induction. Its Grosjean Cup history says the contest was named for him after he won the Blackjack Cup in 2004, 2007 and 2008.
Legal caution
The Hall describes civil litigation involving casinos and the Griffin agency, but legal rights and remedies depend on jurisdiction and facts. This profile is not legal advice and does not generalize one case into a universal rule.
Safe study boundaries
- Use only lawfully observed information.
- Do not mark cards, collude, trespass or use prohibited devices.
- Verify current rules and reproduce the mathematics.
- Keep expected value separate from variance and access risk.
