Blackjack Bankroll & Session Planner

Turn a recreational blackjack budget into a concrete plan for one or more sessions. The planner separates budgeting guidance from mathematical estimates: betting units describe exposure, while expected loss describes a long-run average.

Responsible session planning

Build a bankroll plan

Amounts are currency-neutral. Use the same currency for every money field.

Money set aside for blackjack—not money needed for essentials.

A spending cap, not a prediction and not a way to change the house edge.

Before doubles and splits; actual money placed can be higher.

A full live table may be slower; heads-up or automated play may be faster.

Decimals are accepted—for example, 1.5 hours.

Use a whole number from 1 to 1,000.

Teaching estimates only. Full rules and playing decisions determine the actual edge.

Enter 0.5 for 0.50%, not 0.005.

Budgeting guidanceModerate exposure

20 session betting units. This label compares average bet with the session budget; it does not estimate risk of ruin.

What changes the estimate?

Each row changes one input while holding the others constant. This is a compact expected-loss comparison, not a probability forecast.

JavaScript is unavailable. You can still use the formulas below. The default example gives 100 bankroll units, 20 session units, 140 hands per session, 3,500 of action and 17.50 of expected loss per session.

How the planner works

Bankroll units = bankroll ÷ average bet

Session units = session budget ÷ average bet

Hands per session = hands per hour × hours

Action = average bet × hands

Expected loss = action × house edge

Session budgets contained = bankroll ÷ session budget

The percentage is converted to a decimal before multiplication. A 0.50% edge is 0.005. Results keep full precision internally and are rounded only for display.

Exposure labels are budgeting guidance

  • Conservative exposure: session budget contains at least 40 average betting units.
  • Moderate exposure: 20 to fewer than 40 session units.
  • Aggressive exposure: fewer than 20 session units.

These deliberately simple thresholds only compare the selected average bet with the session spending cap. They do not use blackjack variance, do not estimate risk of ruin and do not guarantee that a budget will last for any number of hands.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Bankroll and session budget are personal spending limits. They are not mathematical predictions.
  • Planned session budgets are treated as separate allocations when the planner checks whether all planned sessions fit inside the bankroll. If you intend to reuse remaining funds, interpret that warning as a conservative budgeting check.
  • The average bet is the initial wager. Doubles, splits, insurance and side bets can increase actual money placed.
  • The house-edge estimate assumes a matching rule set and playing strategy. The presets are useful examples, not universal values.
  • Hands per hour is an estimate; occupancy, dealer speed, breaks and automation change pace.
  • Expected loss is a long-run average. It is not a loss limit, a forecast, a probability of losing or a recommendation to keep playing.
  • A stop-loss or win limit can control time or spending, but it does not change the mathematical expectation of the game.

Connect the plan to expected-loss math

This planner already shows the expected loss implied by the complete plan. For a focused one-session breakdown, edge sensitivity and a 3:2-versus-6:5 teaching comparison, use the Blackjack Expected-Loss Calculator.
