Education and academic career
The UC Irvine Libraries’ Edward O. Thorp archive records that he was born in Chicago in 1932, earned a physics degree in 1953, a master’s degree in 1955 and a doctorate in mathematics in 1958 from UCLA.
UC Irvine states that Thorp held faculty positions at MIT and New Mexico State University before joining UC Irvine in 1965, where he served as a professor of mathematics and finance through 1982.
Computer analysis and blackjack
While at MIT, Thorp used the IBM 704 computer to analyze blackjack probabilities. His work provided a mathematical and reproducible basis for identifying when the composition of the remaining cards could move the expectation toward the player.
That result does not mean every counter wins. Rules, penetration, bet spread, bankroll, accurate execution, variance and casino countermeasures determine whether a theoretical advantage can be used in practice.
Beat the Dealer
Thorp first published Beat the Dealer in 1962. The currently listed Vintage revised edition was published in 1966 and says that more than 1,000,000 copies are in print. “Copies in print” is the publisher’s stated figure, not an audited lifetime sales total.
The book’s enduring contribution is the demonstration that blackjack expectation is sensitive to deck composition and that a systematic count can exploit favorable conditions. Later systems changed tags, indices and practical trade-offs rather than turning the game into a certainty.
The wearable computer was a separate roulette project
MIT’s account says Thorp and Claude Shannon completed an early wearable computer in 1961 to predict sectors of a roulette wheel. It was not the IBM 704 and was not the device used to validate Thorp’s blackjack count.
This distinction matters: computer analysis supported the blackjack research, while the wearable device was a physical roulette experiment developed with Shannon.
Further reading
